‘At Close of Day’ Hen Cloud the Roaches Staffordshire’ the full title of this painting, which is situated in the Peak District between Leek and Buxton. The whole area of the Roaches is a favourite place with walkers and a Mecca for rock-climbers, and the edges provide some of the best grit stone climbing in the country. Hen Cloud (neighbour to the Roaches) as seen in the painting, is an impressive solitary edge which rises steeply from the ground below.
As the title suggests the day is closing down with a well set sun and twilight upon us. Tittesworth Reservoir lies in the distance and glistens in the last light of the day, on the horizon are far reaching views of the Potteries, Stoke on Trent and on and over North Staffordshire. To paint and try and capture the atmosphere of twilight with a setting sun I found a real challenge and as with all things attached to nature and the elements, a real exercise in observation.
