This fabled mountain is perhaps the most impressive in Britain, and gives a day of drama and views that will live in the memory forever. An Teallach is a mountain in Scotland. It lies to the southwest of Dundonnell and overlooks Little Loch Broom, in an area often nicknamed the “great wilderness”. An Teallach means ‘The Anvil’ or ‘The Forge’ in Scottish Gaelic; although most scholars claim the latter is most correct as the mountain’s name refers more to the colour of the terrain in certain lighting conditions, rather than shape.
I discovered An Teallach whilst on holiday in the West Coast of Scotland. Some people that paid me a visit at my gallery in Staffordshire owned a cottage in Gruinard in Wester Ross, and I painted a picture for them in exchange for two weeks stay in their cottage. The painting here was executed some time after back in my studio and is essentially an exhibition painting. It would be technically impossible to paint anything like this on the spot.
