I was Commissioned to paint this picture sometime ago.
The gentleman in this painting joined the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman and eventually climbed the ranks and on leaving the service became a Lieutenant Commander.
Quite an achievement for anyone that joins the service as an ordinary hand.
