A Pair of Apples and Gooseberries (2)

There are over 1200 varieties of English apple, many of which have been crossed with a cox. In this painting I’m not sure which variety this one is from, for I inherited the tree they were picked from along with the house sometime ago. All I know is that it’s a good eater and makes a great apple pie.

‘Two Inkpots and An Old Stone Jar’

All of my still life work is done in my studio, where I can stage manage objects and move things around in my house. In this case I used a shelf above an old Victorian range in an old scullery for two old inkpots and an old stone jar, a backdrop which I shall be using for further still life paintings that I’m working on. There is nothing finer to concentrate the mind than a still life painting, especially with the light and cast shadows which can only define the shape. Strange and fascinating how you can give life to inanimate objects.

We would be interested in whether or not this is something you would consider doing. ‘Study of a Fallen Apple’

This windswept apple was collected from the bottom of my garden. I’ve no idea of the name of this particular apple, for the tree that it came from was in my garden for some time before I came here. It was a good eater and probably came out of a Cox’s. Another bonus about painting still life fruit pictures is you get to eat the props.

‘Blue and White’

This oil on canvas hangs in my kitchen along with blue and white earthenware which my wife collects, along with some bone china which I painted during my time with Coalport China before their timely demise. Everyday objects such as this earthenware which was mass produced in the Staffordshire pottery industry more often than not make for the best paintings.
